Glossary Of Terms Relating to Iron & Steel
Steel Making, Mild Steel, Tools & Alloy steel, Bright Bar & Steel Wire

Alloy Steel - A steel containing one or more alloying elements as a result of which it develops specific characteristics.

Bar - Finished product of solid section which may be rectangular, squares, round or half-round or polygonal.

Bright Bar or Wire - Bar or wire with a bright finish obtained by cold drawing, machining, grinding, etc.

Extra Deep Drawing Steel - A superior quality low carbon deep drawing steel.

Free Cutting Steel - Steel in which special addition of such elements as sulphur, lead, etc., are made to enhance machinability.

High Speed Steel - A special variety of tools steel which, by virtue of its composition, retains its cutting hardness at a low red heat.

HR Coil - A hot-rolled flat product supplied in coil form.

Pickling - The removal of scale by chemical or electrochemical treatment with diluted acids or other chemicals followed by washing.

Skelp - Skelp is strip.

Common Grades:
IS 2062/ 1999, IS 1786/ 1985, SAIL TMT and SAIL TMT HCR. Also available in the following foreign specifications: ASTM-A 615 Grade 40 (for TMT wire rods) and ASTM-A 615 Grade 40/ Grade 60 (for TMT Bars), if sufficient orders are available.

Tolerance as per IS 1786 or equivalent.
Packaging: Signode strapping in bundles of 5 tonnes.
Rounds are available in straight lengths. Plain Rounds/ TMT bars/ TMT-HCR rebars in sizes 8 and 10 mm are available in coils. The other sizes of Plain Rounds/ TMT bars/ TMT-HCR rebars are available in straight lengths.

High Temperature Strength
SAIL TMT-HCR reinforcement bars exhibit higher thermal resistance even at temperatures up to 600 0 C. The retention of significant strength or, in other words, resistance to softening, is attributed to design of steel chemistry, presence of tempered martensite layer on the rebar surface and absence of any cold worked structural zone. Thus the thermally hardened SAIL TMT-HCR rebars are ideal for use in places prone to fire hazards.

Applications
SpecificationApplicationSpecial Qualities
SAIL TMTGeneral concrete reinforcements in high rise buildings, bridges and other concrete structuresExcellent bendability, good weldability and high fatigue resistance on dynamic loading
SAIL TMT HCRConstruction exposed to coastal, marine or underground environmentIn addition to above this has high corrosion resistance properties
